LivingOS UPSILON

UPSILON

A 2-column WordPress theme with sidebar widget support and a totally cool SmoothGallery header. Also support for falbum. This is identical to Epsilon apart from the SmoothGallery integration.

Download LivingOS Upsilon Version 2.5

Latest version: 8th September 2008 (2.5)

How to change gallery images and text:

Edit the code inside the mygallery DIV tag in the extra.php file. The SmoothGallery docs explain what each bit does (and other options) in more detail, but each image consists of a title, description, link and image.
OR get the Mu theme which has a theme option page, avoiding all code edits!

Why doesn’t it work on my blog?

SmoothGallery is very fussy about working along side other javascript libraries. It uses Moo Tools Javascript library and experience shows that if any other kind of js lib is present, it won’t work. If you are having problems, try disabling plugins, especially ones that do things with js, like lightbox etc.

I’m not very code savvy - how do I implement the SmoothGallery?

  • 2 timmy ~ Mar 13, 2008 at 8:11 am

You need to edit the code in the extra.php file. The code you change is inside the gallery div. Check the SmoothGallery’s web site for specifics about options.

  • 3 mamaloo ~ Mar 14, 2008 at 4:40 pm

Tim, I’ve gone through the code and altered it to all my own text/links/images but nothing is happening.

When I implemented the theme, even before I altered any of the code, the only thing that was showing was your background image (as specified in the CSS).

I erased the URl for that image and the space where the SmoothGallery goes is blank.

I turned off the manual options on the gallery and nothing.

I made all the links thoughout the css and php pages that refer to the SmoothGallery stuff absolute URLs and all the title and text that is supposed to come up with each image is suddenly all displayed.

You can see this for yourself by following my link. Any ideas?

  • 4 mamaloo ~ Mar 14, 2008 at 5:45 pm

OK, I’ve re-uploaded the files to start from scratch.

The first thing I need to figure out is why the SmoothGallery is not working in the files you put in your theme. ‘

In your previous comments you said that I need to alter my code. What do I need to alter to get the thing to work in the first place before I swap in my own files?

  • 5 timmy ~ Mar 14, 2008 at 7:17 pm

If it isn’t working out of the box, see if you have any other plugins running like lightbox for example. SmoothGallery does not sit well with some other scripts.

  • 6 mamaloo ~ Mar 14, 2008 at 10:26 pm

OK, I figured it all out. It didn’t want to play nice with a plugin. The plugin was dispensable. But, then it only displayed a black screen.

You had this code: in every img src code line. I stripped it out and the SmoothGallery worked.

Is this extra code an error of yours?

I’ve been using this theme for a few months now and think it’s fantastic - especially the image rotator. In fact, I like it so much that I have two ministry blogs with this theme! But my question is about changing the color scheme on one of the two sites. Is there an easy way to do this? Specifically, I would like to change the green/gold scheme in the header and extra sidebar. Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi,

I’m loving this theme but am having some trouble with the thumbnails displaying in the carousel. I notice that in the LivingOS demo they don’t load either - the carousel just shows a set of blank images. Clicking on one of these blanks does in fact load a corresponding image, it’s just that the thumbnail isn’t being displayed.

    thanks very much.

  • 9 Jarret ~ Mar 28, 2008 at 4:56 am

Hey, great theme, I’m loving it. However, I’m wondering whether you could help me out with some problems I’m having with the carousel. Unfortunately I cannot get thumbnails to load in the carousel. I then tried to hide the carousel via the gallery js file but nothing I change in here seems to affect what’s on the site. Also, the gallery seems to break in Safari in that the carousel sits about halfway up the image.

I’d love it if you could get in touch and point me in the right direction.

    Thanks very much,

    Jarret

I just installed this theme to use as part of a church project, and really like the look of it. Header rotation works out of the box for me.

What didn’t work after a quick look around was the 404 error page. It was trying to show a sidebar2.php which didn’t exist, and didn’t have the 404 error wrapped in the wrapper div.

Thanks for the theme! Once the church’s site is up, I’ll send you the link for your list.

  • 11 Mark Adams ~ Apr 18, 2008 at 3:50 pm

I’m using this theme for our Camp Victory website, and everyone loves it. One question though. I got the gallery to work, but how do I modify the “What’s Happening” area beside it? I’ve looked through all the files, and can’t seem to figure it out. Thanks!

  • 12 Tim ~ Apr 19, 2008 at 6:34 pm

Mark, you need to use widgets. The theme has two sidebars for widgets. Sidebar 1 is down the right hand side and sidebar 2 is the What’s Happening space.
I also updated this theme in the last week to fix a couple of things. You may want to re-download it.

  • 13 Tim ~ Apr 19, 2008 at 6:43 pm

The 404 page is fixed in the latest update.

Hi, I’m trying to use rs-events calendar on a holiday and festivals page. I created the page and switched the template to rs event page. The page is blank even though I have events listed on the calendar which show up on the front page. How can I get this to work?

  • 15 Mark Adams ~ Apr 20, 2008 at 10:22 pm

I notice you use tabbertab on this page. Anything special to adding it to a WordPress theme? Thanks.

  • 16 Mark Adams ~ Apr 21, 2008 at 1:16 am

One more thing. I’ve added two widgest to sidebar2 — recent posts and event calendar. The “recent posts” header is a different color than all the others. How can I get it to match? Thanks again.

  • 17 Tim ~ Apr 21, 2008 at 7:44 am

    Looks like you fixed it?

  • 18 Jade ~ Apr 21, 2008 at 11:00 pm

Tim, are you asking me or Mark? If me, then no I didn’t I just removed the page.

  • 19 Tim ~ Apr 22, 2008 at 7:26 am

Yes, I was asking Mark. But I’ve just visited your site. RS-Event doesn’t seem to be being updated by the author anymore. But there is a fixed version for use with WP 2.5. It’s here in case you haven’t already got it.

  • 21 Steve Young ~ May 3, 2008 at 12:27 am

After much searching your theme was the best for our non-profit.

With both the last version and the new version (with smoothgallery) When we set the home page to a static page the site breaks. It does not show when you are logged in as admin, only when as a normal user. On the home page the sidebar is moved to the left. I can work around the problem by making a page called “Home” but then we have two home pages. (they both work)

Using a few other themes I can not replicate this problem.

Right now the site is set to show the problem. As we look for work around it may change. (the development of the site including logos and edits to the css file (that we have removed) were done with the maintenance mode plug-in so we did not see the problem until we turned that off)

All our other wp sites have the blog on the “home page” or call the blog from a static HTML page. So I have no experience with the home page as a static page.

One other problem is that when using the [gallery] option in the new wordpress 2.5.1 (or 2.5) the images are “crowded” overlap slightly and encroach on the sidebar.

    Thanks in advance Tim

  • 22 Steve Young ~ May 4, 2008 at 11:30 pm

I found a workaround to the two HOME tabs. This plugin lets us turn the extra one off.
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/exclude-pages/

I now need to look for more info on the crowded images when using [gallery]

  • 23 Amanda ~ May 6, 2008 at 2:31 am

Hi there! I am pretty new to Word Press and coding and all that. I’ve figured out a few things, but there’s a lot about customizing this site that I just can’t figure out.

Some of this may be basic, so I apolgize in advance. Where do I change things such as the information under “Contact Us” and “Gatherings”

Also, I’m trying to figure out Smooth Gallery. I re-saved my own pictures in the same locations and gave them the same names as the ones you refer to in you extra.php file thinking that would be an easy way to swap my images for yours, but for some reason it didn’t work.

I was able to change the descriptions and to customize the colors, but otherwise I’m a bit stumped.

It’s also not a very practical solution. I was looking at the Smooth Gallery instructions, but I did not find them easy to follow; I’m not sure which files to modify.

Maybe your design is too complicated for me to modify, but I do like it and would love to figure out how to make it work for me.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Amanda

Thanks for this nice clean theme and the event calendar implementation… we have used it for a nonprofit site: http://svionline.org/

We used SlideShowPro instead of smoothgallery, and created a simple sub-page navigation layout, but essentially the theme is very much like the original.

    Hey,

After a week or two I’ve finally figured out how to use SmoothGallery with it. But is there a way to modify it so I can use the SmoothGallery that draws pictures from Flickr?

  • 28 Tim ~ May 17, 2008 at 8:35 am

    Some info here

  • 29 Tim ~ May 17, 2008 at 8:38 am

Selina, a flickr feed would be a nice feature, but not here at present. Someone somewhere I’m sure will have done that.

  • 30 John ~ May 27, 2008 at 9:37 pm

I love this Theme! Your best one yet imho. I’m having a bit of trouble with the thumbnails however. I’ve gone through the smoothgallery documentation and loaded the mini images, added the code in extra.php but i still only get empty boxes in the carousel. I can’t seam to figure out what i’m missing.

  • 31 Richard Silverstein ~ Jun 2, 2008 at 8:11 pm

I’m seeking a new theme for my blog & like the designs here a great deal. I was a little concerned about how long some of the blogs are taking to load the image galllery in the various blog banners using the theme. I don’t want a slow-loading theme.

Also, I wondered if I can set the image gallery to load only a single image per page view rather than having the slideshow rotate during the page view. I assume having a single static image is something I can do?

Also, I’d like to tweak the configuration in a few ways to accomodate my blog. Could the theme author get in touch w. me as to whatever fees he might charge for this?

  • 32 Emma ~ Jun 5, 2008 at 12:56 pm

Hi, I am using your theme for a site, the trouble is I only want to have the gallery on the home page, like the user 8 posts up on this forum has done. Does anyone know how I can achieve this?

  • 33 Tim ~ Jun 10, 2008 at 7:16 am

Just take out the line of code in the index.php file that pull sin the extra.php template.

Hi I love the theme but I can’t get the what’s happening to work. It worked for me in the past and I have the rs event but don’t know what I’m doing wronge

  • 35 Richard Silverstein ~ Jun 13, 2008 at 8:10 am

Tim: can you tell me how to access the What’s Happening section of the main pg. How do you use the sidebar widget plugin to change the display content?

  • 36 Richard Silverstein ~ Jun 24, 2008 at 12:24 am

I haven’t gotten any replies to previous queries but I’m hoping perhaps to have more luck this time.

I’ve got a Upsilon working on a test blog I’ve created:
    http://www.rgpc.co.uk/wordpress/

However, when I try to activate the banner at my actual blog the slideshow doesn’t work. I believe there’s something wrong in the filepath I’m using, but can’t figure out where/what the mistake is.

Here’s the code I’m using at my test blog to call the slideshow (that’s working):

    http://www.rgpc.co.uk/wordpress/

Here’s the code I’m using at my actual blog (that isn’t working):

    http://www.rgpc.co.uk/wordpress/

The folder structure in the test blog is: “/wp-content/themes/LivingOS_UPSILON/smoothgallery/images/shine/”

The folder structure in the real blog is: “/public_html/tikun_olam/wp-content/themes/LivingOS_UPSILON/smoothgallery/images/shine/”

I’d be grateful if Tim has any ideas about what’s wrong.

  • 37 Richard Silverstein ~ Jun 24, 2008 at 12:26 am

Sorry the code was botched above. Here’s the relevant portion corrected:

Here’s the code I’m using at my test blog to call the slideshow (that’s working):

    <img src=”/smoothgallery/images/shine/dafnatalimage.jpg” class=”full” alt=”Mahzor” />

Here’s the code I’m using at my actual blog (that isn’t working):

    <img src=”/smoothgallery/images/shine/dafnatalimage.jpg” class=”full” alt=”Mahzor” />

  • 38 Richard Silverstein ~ Jun 24, 2008 at 12:29 am

That didn’t work either. Perhaps trying without code tags might work better:

Here’s the code I’m using at my test blog to call the slideshow (that’s working):

    <img src=”/smoothgallery/images/shine/dafnatalimage.jpg” class=”full” alt=”Mahzor” />

Here’s the code I’m using at my actual blog (that isn’t working):

    <img src=”/smoothgallery/images/shine/dafnatalimage.jpg” class=”full” alt=”Mahzor” />

I’m back trying to find the source of another problem.

I use Text Link Ad’s InLinks program and it was working before, but for some reason does not seem to be working after doing some software upgrades. I’m trying to isolate the problem so I’m starting with the theme.

Has there been any issues that you know of with an ad plugin on the Upsilon theme? I know the smoothgallery was finicky with some plugins, but everything is currently working EXCEPT the TLA plugin.

Your thoughts would be much appreciated. I’d like to continue using this theme but I won’t be able to if it compromises my income (Which went from $15 per month to nothing because of this problem).

  • 45 Tim ~ Jul 12, 2008 at 10:06 pm

It’s easy enough to try another theme if you think it my causing a problem. I have plenty of problems with TLA but not with this theme.

  • 52 dave ~ Aug 26, 2008 at 3:52 am

Tim, is there a way to add some simple code in order to be able to make a link from the navbar on the top go to an external website? Is there any reason why you never replied to any of my comments here nor to my attempts to contact you by e mail? I have to say that while you have a wonderful plugin which many have admired at my site, your silence has left me disappointed.

  • 57 Tim ~ Sep 7, 2008 at 7:51 am

I don’t get to answer every query I’m afraid and I’m sorry I missed yours.

From what I can gather the problem you are having is to do with SmoothGallery. If you read other comments here, the most common cause of SG problems is some other piece of JavaScript. SmoothGallery is pretty fussy. Disable other plugins and scripts till it works.

As I am not a coder, justa wedding photographer, I am having a few issues when it comes to customising the theme for my needs.

I hope you or someone can help me with a couple of questions : )

Firstly, how do I make it a left sidebar theme, i.e move SIDEBAR 1 & 2 to the left and SmoothGallery to the right?

Secondly, is it possible to make SmoothGallery generate random image slideshows so when you navigate to different pages the images are in a different order?

Alternativley, is it possible to have different static images on each page?

These couple of questins will keep me going for a while.

  • 83 Claire ~ Jan 2, 2009 at 2:04 am

Wow! I installed and I am using this theme to display my husband’s art work in an online gallery. This is simply one of the most beautiful and easy to use themes I have come across. Thank you. I did just send a donation your way. I plan on sending a little more in a couple of weeks. Thank you again for such good work!

Tim, I don’t understand the code, but I wanted to bring to your attention that the logout link is covered by a nonce in 2.7, and this theme seems not to have implemented this. The impact of it is that it’s not possible for a user to logout from a link on the site itself (such as where a plugin might require registration). Logout from the admin works fine, it’s a theme compliance issue apparently.

Can you give us some direction on what file needs to be changed, and how? I’m using the Epsilon theme (not Upsilon) if that matters.

More on this issue is at
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/wp_logout_url
    and at
    http://trac.wordpress.org/ticket/7829
    and at
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/225333?replies=11

Thanks for any quick help you can provide here!

How would I go about updating a theme for 2.7 compatibility? Lots of things like nested comments aren’t implemented in an otherwise very good theme. Perhaps someone else has done this before?

  • 87 Tim ~ Jan 15, 2009 at 9:02 am

Just to clarify: If a theme doesn’t support new features in 2.7 (or any version) that isn’t the same as saying it is incompatible. There are very few WP themes out there that support every feature of WP.
If you want certain features included in one of my themes please be specific and I’ll do my best to take a look at it.

  • 88 richard jevons ~ Jan 17, 2009 at 5:40 pm

Hi Tim, I am currently looking at this theme (fantastic BTW) to update my church website. I have hit one small problem. When i have child pages as soon as i go to a child page it’s siblings disappear. If i alter the code so that they do not when there are no child pages the page background disappears! Once i have played a bit longer off line i will hopefully put it on line and let you have a link. Thanks Richard

  • 89 Jonathan ~ Jan 17, 2009 at 9:43 pm

Tim, the RS Event plugin doesn’t seem to be working with WP 2.7. I heard from somebody that you are maintaining the plugin, or if your not do you know where to find an update that will make it work. I’m currently using the PSI theme and the RS Event plugin is a big part of that theme.

Hello - I’m the first Jonathan asking about updating for 2.7

Well, it took me a few days (I knew really nothing of Wordpress) but I’ve now made it play nicely with 2.7, including nested comments.

Also updated to smoothgallery 2.1 and theme made wider for modern monitors.

Test site and download link - just click on my name.

Jonathan, nice to see you got SmoothGallery 2.1 working. I haven’t updated SmoothGallery in UPSILON because on some browsers it doesn’t work! The issues are well documented on the SG forums.

The choice of how wide you make your design is not governed by monitor size, it is down to design. My humble opinion is that the new width breaks the design. I’d recommend a different theme if you want to cover more monitor. But I’m sure some folk will appreciate you making this wider version available.

Hi there, thought you might like to see how I adapted the theme for a business client.

  • 95 Jonathan ~ Jan 28, 2009 at 5:04 pm

I had the opposite experience - I HAD to update to SG2.1 because the Mootools and javascript library in the older version was breaking a couple of widgets. It seems to work fine on all the current versions of Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari and IE8 which covers the basis of most rendering engines.
The only problem I had was of the images appearing over the blog until all loaded.

    So I changed

    to

in extra.php, and that fixed it.

  • 96 Jonathan ~ Jan 28, 2009 at 5:07 pm

Ooops! That didn’t work - let’s try a different way:

    to

If that doesn’t appear, try this:
    div id=”myGallery”
    to
    div id=”myGallery” style=”display: none;”
    in extra.php

  • 97 Chris ~ Jan 29, 2009 at 2:37 pm

First and foremost… Thanks for the awesome setup here. My only question… Not knowing much about the coding side of things, how hard would it be to have the page links offer drop down menus? For example, if I have a main topic of “about us”, when highlighted, you could have a dropdown menu with items such as “staff”, “beliefs”, etc…

    Thanks
    Chris

Hi Tim and daoducquan - just to let you know I’ve made the changes.
It always has had a different folder, so there’s no “overwriting” - people can switch back and forth.
Please let me know if this is OK now.

I’ve not started using Upsilon but before I do I’d like to know whether you can customise the overall green theme for another colour. Someone did ask the same question earlier but I cannot find any reply. Any advice would be appreciated.

  • 111 Tim ~ Mar 10, 2009 at 4:42 pm

There are examples around which have been done by creating new or colourizing the existing gradient backgrounds used in the theme. There aren’t many so it wouldn’t take much.

    Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knew what the “Recent Photos” plugin is that is visible in the screenshot.png file. It shows 3 photos in a row on the right column.

  • 114 Tim ~ Mar 19, 2009 at 7:58 am

It is probably FlickrRSS or falbum.

  • 115 Mike ~ Mar 22, 2009 at 5:02 am

Hello, I was looking into downloading the Upsilon theme but would need to change the header graphic. Can I just edit the supplied jpeg file in the images folder and upload to site or is it “attached” to a url as it appears to be in the css file?
This theme appears to be just what we are looking for but we would need to modify images and colors. Thank you in advance.

  • 116 Tim ~ Mar 22, 2009 at 8:56 am

You can edit the jpg and upload it. provided it has the same name it will show up.

  • 117 Mike ~ Mar 26, 2009 at 3:08 am

    Thanks Tim!
Another easy question I hope. Can I only have the gallery show on the home page? What would that code be and would you only need to edit the page.php file? Removing the line that references the extra.php file kills the gallery for all my pages (including home). Can I keep the home page gallery and exclude my other pages? Also, would it be possible to have multiple galleries that ran on different pages? Thanks again.

  • 118 Tim ~ Mar 27, 2009 at 7:59 am

Pages.php only effect pages. You need to learn more about the anatomy of Wp themes. Single.php handles posts for example.
